New York City-based Kenyan artist Maya Amolo has released visuals for her single “I Know,” which is featured on her debut EP Leave Me At The Pregame, released in July.
Amolo is known for her raspy vocals, soft melodies and thought-provoking lyrics, all of which are present in the hit track. The powerful visuals are supported by even more powerful subject matter, as Maya sings about a past lover who did her dirty. The lyrics, however, tell the story of a woman who is stronger and worth more than someone who doesn’t know how to treat a woman the right way.
The visuals, colours and scenes throughout the video perfectly encapsulate the aura of a woman dead set on glowing up after getting out of a bad relationship. The video was shot by Maya’s mother Mumbi Muturi in Nairobi, Kenya.
Her mother had this to say, “When I first heard the song “I Know” I immediately saw Diana Ross in the ’70s looking fabulous. Retro fashion with its effortless glamour for a song about a person that stays but wants to leave. Whether they are in an abandoned building or a bath of roses, glamorous or simple, they are unhappy and want to leave. We all know them, the ones who stay and hope for change and we know the ones who walk away, I wanted to capture both.”
