Fantasy Island is an upcoming American supernatural horror film.
The film is based on the ABC television series of the same name, which ran from 1977-1984 and was created by Gene Levitt.
Similarly to the ABC television series, Fantasy Island is based around a tropical island run by the mysterious Mr. Roarke (Pena), who aspires to make the fantasies of his guests come true. Soon after arrival, the guests’ fantasies turn to nightmares and must figure out how to solve the island’s mystery in order to escape with their lives. The television series wasn’t traditionally horror, though it had some horror elements and plots including murder, kidnapping, and other misfortunes. Roarke in the ABC TV series was benevolent and typically came to his guests’ rescue when their wishes got out of control, despite telling them that he’s powerless and they must see their fantasies through.
The film was originally scheduled to open on February 28, 2020, but was moved up on the calendar, likely to take advantage of Valentine’s Day Weekend. Fantasy Island releases in theaters on February 14, 2020.
